STAY AWAY! THE CRIMINAL NEWS THREATENS YOUR LIVE
“Good news is rare these days, and every glittering ounce of it should be cherished and hoarded and worshipped and fondled like a priceless diamond.”- (Hunter S. Thompsom).
If you really catch what that quotation conveys, you will understand why the existence of good news is extremely needed in today’s living. Good news can exist because of the role of media as the means of communication either it is written, broadcasted, or spoken. This includes television, radio, advertising, movies, and so forth. It has played significant role to educate, inform, and entertain the society. However, the current fact shows us that the existence of media is totally back-clash with its roles. What becomes a problem is the media really exposes the news without filtering and considering the content first. Let us take an example of criminal news. To date, criminal news informs the incident of crime in detail such as: how the criminal kills his victim, when he does it, and the process to realize his action. This kind of detail information can be bad for people who have an intention to do so. It becomes useful example to run their action since they have big curiosity to do what they get. On the other hand, we probably ask what makes the criminal news exist. It exists for several causes and its existence can harm the society by its effects.
Beginning with the causes why the criminal news exists, we are going to talk about the role of journalists in arranging the news. As we know that the role journalists is really important in media circumstances. They have to seek for an interesting topic or news to be served to the society. The more exaggerated they serve the news, the more attention they will get. Therefore, they exaggerate the news. Besides, the attention of the society is really important in journalism. It is necessary to keep their reputation which takes a significant part to make the media become well-known. Moreover, they also extremely believe in the freedom of expression. They can express their thoughts, feelings, and creations freely through criminal news. Probably, they think that human rights in terms of freedom of expression are significant to uphold. Hence, they can freely publish and inform the news regardless of considering whether it is good or bad to the society. Even, they do not think deeply that the society will take for granted of their news content. It happens because the society really trusts media as the trusted source of information.
After knowing about the causes, we are going to talk the effects of criminal news. Firstly, it affects the society in term of pyschology aspect. It happens when the society really trusts the content of that news. By this kind of trust, it can make them to be doctrined to take it for granted without considering and filtering the content. Afterwards, it can simply change their point of view. We assume that the point of view is changeable because of the doctrine given by the criminal news. What becomes a severe problem when the point of view changed, it can stimulate and effect the society in term of doing the same action. It is because of the curiousity had by them. We believe that the curiousity is one of the human nature. As human beings, everybody has an intention to realize their curiousity. To make these three effects clear, let us analyze the case of consuming drugs. At first, the society will get doctrine from the news which talks everything about someone who consumes drugs. Unintentionally, the society will think that drugs consumption does not become the matter because it has been a common case. At the end, their point of view will lead them to do same thing because they are full of curiousity to taste the drugs.
On the other hand, the effects in term of social judgment can also exist after getting effects from psychological aspect. We believe that the effects from physcological aspect can bring other effects. Let us begin with the aspect of identity. The existence of media functions to reflect the society’s condition in the country. However, the bad effects can happen when the media expose the news exaggeratedly. Automatically, it can also show and tell other countries to know what actually happens in the country. For instance, the news about the case of Pedophilia numbers which is reported exaggeratedly in Indonesia. We all know that media is spread widely over the world. Hence, the case of Pedophilia which is exaggerated can be spread rapidly and all people will know about that. Moreover, after all people know what happens in Indonesia, it can make such kind of tendency to freely judge that Indonesian people are bad. This kind of judgment can make Indonesia labeled as a bad country (it is also called as Stigma). Finally, this stigma can become a bad paradigm that reflects the identity of Indonesia and it can harm the society by this effect.
After knowing the causes and the effects of criminal news, we should be sensitive for the content of news served by the media. They should filter and consider first about the content before publishing it. It is because the content is really dangerous and influencing to the society. Eventually, the media is supposed to expose and inform good news without exaggerating it in the future.
